Your Treasured Family VHS, Betamax & Camcorder Tapes Can Be Repaired & Transferred to DVD & MP4
Most damaged video tapes can be repaired. If your VHS, Betamax or Camcorder tape was mangled in your video recorder, there's a very strong chance we can repair it for you. The repair may involve losing a short piece of video tape but everything other than the damaged section should be salvageable. Once the tape has been mended, it can then be digitally transferred to a modern format such as an MP4 file on a USB memory stick. It can be transferred to DVD but please bear in mind that DVD as a format is now on it's way out of fashion! MP4 files on a memory stick are a much better way of future proofing your videos.
Another form of damage we are now seeing very frequently is mold on video tapes. Often family video tape collections have been stored for years in a loft, the garage or even the garden shed. These aren't the most ideal places to store & preserve your treasured tapes. They are often the coldest, hottest or dampest places in your house! Video tapes don't like extreme changes in temperature or a damp conditions and over time they can start to develop mold. Once mold has taken hold it will eventually render the tape unusable. However, if mold has just started to appear there's a very good chance your tapes can still be salvaged but you will need to act fast! You can see the mold developing by looking through the clear plastic panels on top of your tapes. Look for a white residue on the leading edges of the video tape surfaces. If you see mold, don't wait to get your tapes digitally transferred, get them done as soon as you possibly can. If there is a slight dusting of mold, chances are you may just have caught them in the nick of time! Left too long and once the mold has really taken hold, nothing at all can be done to rescue them. So act today before you lose them forever!
Another form of damage could be a damaged video cassette casing. Maybe it has been attacked by the dog or it has been driven over by an enthusiastic youngster in a pedal car! Video tapes can be damaged in any manner of ways. However the good news is, if the tape inside is undamaged then it's probable that it can be rescued. It may be a matter of taking the video cassette apart and repairing what is there, just enough so that it will play and can be digitally transferred. If the case is too damaged to repair it may need to be re cased by removing the insides and placing them inside a new cassette.
Magnetic tape, the tape which is inside you video cassette is affected by many varying conditions. One factor than can have a devastating effect on your video tapes is again, where they are stored and what they are stored with! When family video tape collections are relegated to the loft, they are often stored with other items. These may include old HiFi systems, radios, headphones, microphones, TV's and more. Guess what! Many of these items have magnets in them. Loudspeakers have big magnets, headphones have magnets, TV's have magnets ans so on. Magnets are bad news for video tapes, stored for a prolonged length of time alongside items like these will slowly but surely degrade them.
Did you know that analogue and digital video tapes deteriorate a little more each day? They won't last forever, so the sooner you get them transferred to a digital format the better. Don't put it off, you may just leave it too long!
