Black and white
families, children, couples and individual photographs of people
Back in 1958, when William and Mavis Hart first established the
business, almost all of the photography we created was in black and
white. Some colour photography was available in the form of slides
and prints from transparencies but generally colour photographs
weren’t very light stable and would fade fairly quickly. So, as
black and white prints were very stable, all of the weddings and
portraits we were photographing at this time were created in black
and white.
By the mid 1960’s, colour prints were becoming more commonly
available but it wasn’t really until the 1970’s that colour was to
become a real force to compete with black and white. However, it
wasn’t too long before colour pretty much took over every form of
photography we undertook, it wasn’t long before black and white
photography was very much in the minority.
By the early 1980’s, the only photography we were now producing in
black and white was for passport and identity photographs and a
small amount for commercial clients. No one wanted portraits and
weddings photographed in black and white any longer. It wasn’t
really until the early to mid 1990’s that black and white started to
make some sort of a resurgence. This was due in part to a new
generation of people who were seeing it as something new, as they
had grown up on seeing everything in colour. By the early 2000’s it
was back once again as a popular choice for customers.
These days black and white portraits account for about half of the
total portraits we create, in fact it’s now the case that almost
anything goes. Due to the digital age, we are only restricted by our
imagination. Black and white pictures with selected areas of colour
are also now quite the norm and look very effective.
